Is work eating your waking hours?

Try this today.

Is work eating your waking hours?

You know your work is consuming your waking hours when:

The last thing you did yesterday was close your working laptop and go to bed.

The first thought you had before opening your eyes was work-related.

If this sounds true to your current situation, think about your goal.

Is thinking, talking, and breathing work aligned with your goal?

Wait. Is work your exclusive goal?

What about time, social, physical, mental, and fun goals?

Make space for the things that get you closer to your desired destination.

Here's how:

  • Finish the day by design, not by default: Make your last activity of the day a goal-related activity. Instead of squeezing into your calendar "a one-last important work meeting", reject the invitation (or cancel it if you were the one who booked) and do something else. An extra point if the activity makes you laugh. Double points if it makes you forget about work. Triple extra points if you're doing it with the sun still up in the sky.
  • Start the day by design, not by default: acknowledge and move on. You can do that by repeating this mantra:
"This thought is related to my work.
My work is one of many means to my goal.
That reminds me of my goal,
which is [this one]."

This mind trick will redirect your focus. It will make it easier for you to tap into what truly matters to you, thus starting your day paying yourself first.

All best,

Alberto
